Stale indoor air — carrying the residual cooling or heating energy from the building’s air conditioning system — is drawn through the FHR’s aluminum counterflow recuperator before being expelled. Up to 94% of the thermal energy in the exhaust stream is captured and delivered to the incoming fresh air, significantly reducing the demand on the building’s primary HVAC equipment. When outdoor temperatures are mild, the bypass damper activates to allow direct free-cooling without engaging the recuperator, and provides freeze protection for the exchanger core during cold conditions.
